Trade Inside Bar Breakouts with Clear Rules

An inside bar strategy trades the breakout from a period of contraction. An inside bar is a candle whose high is below the previous candle's high and whose low is above the previous low. The market has paused inside the previous candle's range, and the break of that range often starts the next move.

How to spot an inside bar

ConditionRule
Inside bar highBelow the mother bar's high
Inside bar lowAbove the mother bar's low
ColourEither colour qualifies
Mother barIdeally a large candle, after a clear move

Two inside bars in a row, both within the same mother bar, show a tighter coil. The inside bar is the same shape as the harami in candlestick patterns, but traders read it for the breakout rather than for a reversal.

The rules

  1. Spot the pattern at the close of the inside bar.
  2. Place two stop orders: buy above the mother bar's high and sell below the mother bar's low. When one fills, cancel the other.
  3. Stop: for a long, below the inside bar's low. A wider, safer stop is below the mother bar's low.
  4. Target: 2 times the risk, or take half at 1.5 times and trail the rest.
  5. Cancel the orders if neither side breaks within a set number of candles, such as three.

Many traders only take the breakout in the direction of the trend: longs above the 50-period average, shorts below it.

A worked example

On a daily Nifty futures chart in an uptrend, the mother bar has a high of 25,180 and a low of 24,960. The next day's candle has a high of 25,120 and a low of 25,010: an inside bar.

  • Buy stop: 25,185, above the mother bar's high
  • Sell stop: 24,955, below its low (only if you trade both sides)
  • Long stop: 25,005, below the inside bar's low, a risk of 180 points
  • Target: 2 times the risk, 25,185 + 360 = 25,545

One lot of 65 risks ₹11,700 for a target of ₹23,400. Using the mother bar's low as the stop raises the risk to 230 points (₹14,950) with fewer early stop-outs. These numbers illustrate the rules, not a result.

Inside bar rules: mother bar 24,960–25,180, buy stop 25,185, stop 25,005 below the inside bar, target 25,545 (illustration)

Filters that improve the setup

  • Trend direction. Breakouts in the direction of the trend hold more often than those against it.
  • Location. An inside bar just below resistance or just above support marks a decision point. See support and resistance strategy.
  • Range size. An inside bar much narrower than usual (an NR4 or NR7 day, the narrowest of the last 4 or 7) shows a tighter coil.
  • Volume. A breakout on rising volume is more convincing. See volume breakouts.

When the strategy works, and when it does not

Works best when:

  • Volatility has fallen after a strong move, and a new move is building.
  • The breakout comes with the trend and with a catalyst, such as a global cue or a result.

Struggles when:

  • The market is choppy and both sides break in turn. A false break followed by a reversal is the most common loss.
  • The mother bar is very large. The stop is then wide and the target far.
  • Breakouts happen on a gap at the open, which fills the stop order far from the trigger.

Intraday inside bars

On 15-minute charts, inside bars are frequent and less reliable. The first candle of the day is often large, so an inside bar on the second candle can be traded as a small opening range breakout. Keep a time exit, such as 15:15.

Automating an inside bar strategy

In QuantPower's strategy builder:

  1. Condition: the last candle's high is below the previous high and its low above the previous low.
  2. Orders: a buy stop above the mother bar's high and a sell stop below its low, one cancelling the other.
  3. Stop and target as above, with a cancel rule after three candles.
  4. An MTM stop loss for the day.

Test it in paper trading before going live.

Backtesting an inside bar strategy

  • Test both stop placements, inside bar and mother bar.
  • Compare trend-filtered and unfiltered versions.
  • Count the false breaks: trades stopped out within one or two candles.
  • Include slippage on stop orders, which fill at or beyond the trigger.

See how to backtest trading strategies.

Frequently asked questions

What is an inside bar in trading?

A candle whose high and low are both within the previous candle's range.

Is an inside bar bullish or bearish?

Neither on its own. It shows a pause. The direction comes from the breakout and the trend.

What is the mother bar?

The candle before the inside bar, whose range contains it.

Which timeframe is best for inside bars?

Daily and 1-hour charts give cleaner signals than 5-minute or 15-minute charts.
