MTM in two senses
- Intraday MTM: the profit or loss on your open and closed positions today at current prices. Brokers and platforms show it live, and an MTM stop loss acts on it.
- Daily MTM settlement: for futures, the clearing corporation settles gains and losses in cash every day, based on the day's settlement price. Your account is credited or debited even though the position stays open.
How MTM is calculated
An example
For options, the buyer pays the premium upfront, so the MTM on a long option is shown as a running profit or loss but is not settled daily. Option sellers keep margin blocked, and the broker tracks their MTM against it.
Why MTM matters
- Margin: losses on futures are debited daily, so your account must keep enough free margin.
- Risk limits: watching the combined MTM of all positions shows how close you are to your daily loss limit.
- Automation: an MTM stop loss squares off positions when the day's combined MTM reaches a limit you set.
