Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. The exchanges hold a special Muhurat trading session that day, with timings announced by circular.
What changes on expiry day
- Extra margin for sellers: short index options expiring that day carry an additional 2% extreme loss margin.
- No calendar spread benefit: positions in contracts expiring that day lose the margin offset from calendar spreads.
- Settlement: index options settle in cash. Stock options that expire in the money settle by delivery of shares, so many brokers restrict new positions in the days before expiry.
- STT on exercise: in-the-money options held to expiry are exercised, and the buyer pays STT of 0.15% on the intrinsic value. See our STT tax calculator.

Planning strategies around expiry
- Weekly strategies on Nifty run Tuesday to Tuesday. In weeks with a holiday on Tuesday, the expiry moves to Monday, so a strategy that enters on Monday may be trading on expiry day.
- Monthly strategies on Bank Nifty and stocks have one expiry a month, so check the date before choosing a contract.
- Algo bots should pick the contract by expiry date rather than a fixed symbol, so they roll correctly when a holiday moves the expiry.

Frequently asked questions
How do I work out the Nifty expiry date for a week?
Take that week's Tuesday. If Tuesday is a trading holiday, the expiry moves to the previous trading day, and the last Tuesday of the month is also the monthly expiry.
What happens to expiry when it falls on a holiday?
Contracts expire on the previous trading day. For example, the Nifty weekly expiry due on Tuesday, 10 November 2026 moves to Monday, 9 November because of Diwali Balipratipada.
Which indices have weekly options in 2026?
Only two: Nifty 50 on NSE, expiring on Tuesdays, and Sensex on BSE, expiring on Thursdays. Bank Nifty, FinNifty, Nifty Midcap Select, Nifty Next 50, Bankex and Sensex 50 expire monthly.
When is Sensex expiry?
Thursday. Sensex weekly options expire every Thursday on BSE, and the monthly contract on the last Thursday.
When is the last F&O expiry of 2026?
29 December 2026 on NSE and 31 December 2026 on BSE.
