What Is Paper Trading?

Paper trading, also called virtual trading, is trading on live market prices with virtual money, so you can test a strategy or practise without risking capital.

How paper trading works

Orders are simulated instead of being sent to the exchange. When the live price reaches your order's price, the platform records a virtual fill and tracks the position and its P&L as if it were real.

An example

Example
A trader paper trades a Nifty short straddle for 18 sessions with one lot. The virtual record shows the entries at 09:20, the stop losses and the time exits, with a net virtual P&L. Before going live, the trader compares the paper results with a backtest of the same 18 days. If paper is much worse, the backtest's cost assumptions were probably too low.

What paper trading is good for

  • Checking the logic: errors in entries, exits or re-entries show up before they cost money.
  • Testing on today's market: a backtest shows the past; paper trading shows how rules behave now.
  • Learning a platform: practise placing orders, setting stops and reading positions.

What paper trading cannot show

  • Rejections: live orders can be rejected for margin, price bands or order types.
  • Partial fills and queue position: a live limit order can wait or fill in parts.
  • Slippage in fast markets: virtual fills are often better than real ones.
  • Emotions: real losses are harder to sit through than virtual ones.

Our guide to paper trading vs live trading covers the differences.

How long to paper trade

Several weeks, across different market conditions, at the same size you plan to trade live. Do not reset the account after losses; treat virtual losses as lessons.

Frequently asked questions

Is paper trading the same as forward testing?

Yes, in practice. Both run a strategy on live prices without real money, after a backtest.

Do paper trading results predict live results?

They are a better guide than a backtest alone, but live results are usually somewhat worse because of slippage, rejections and partial fills.

Can I paper trade options?

Yes. Options strategies can be paper traded on live option prices.

Simulated results do not guarantee live performance. Trading involves substantial risk.
